Tax Returns

As the Treasurer and Board Member of MK9s Service Dogs I take my responsibility as a fiduciary of the funds entrusted to us very seriously. It is only through the generosity of our donors that we are able to serve the veterans we do.

Your generosity has let us place Service Dogs Beck, Legend, Cliff, Homer, Ellie Jo and Orion and make significant progress with our Service Dogs in Training (SDiT) Dez and Mosby. SDiT Lois was career changed to Search and Rescue training. Thanks to your generosity, our all-volunteer group of Canine Mentors (puppy raisers) and professional trainers can dedicate the necessary time working with the SDiTs and their veterans to develop the necessary skills and close bonds which will ensure their future success as solid teams without worrying about funds for the puppies’ medical care and supplies needed as a service dog (e.g., jackets).

This page of our website is dedicated to providing complete transparency of our financials.

MK9s Service Dogs was incorporated in May 2019, applied for 501(c)(3) status in June 2019, and received notice of exemption from federal income taxes the same month. Clicking on the underlined phrases in the preceding sentence will take you to our Form 1023 application and the IRS letter of exemption.

An IRS Form 990-EZ is a tax return for a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity with annual receipts of less than $200,000 and total assets of less than $500,000.  Please let me know if you have any questions about our tax submissions by emailing me at mk9servicedogs@gmail.com. 2020 IRS Form 990-EZ, 2021 IRS Form 990-EZ, and 2022 IRS Form 990-EZ.

I would like to point out the magnitude of the efforts of our volunteer base and how critical their efforts are to our success. The IRS specifically excludes reporting the value of donated services. The donated services of our professional trainers and our veterinarians currently equates to over $4,000 per month of donated services. (Look on Schedule O of our IRS Form 990-EZ return to see comments of a true cost comparison.) The dedication of these volunteers tremendously reduces what would be a sizeable fundraising burden. This is why we consider all of our volunteers to be heroes, individuals working hard to maximize the development of successful service dog and veteran teams.

To all our volunteers, donors, corporate sponsors and potential donors we are extremely grateful for all you do for us. Our work would not be possible without your generous hearts. You have allowed us to give hope and a fresh outlook on life to veterans who have sought out our assistance.

Thank you and may God bless you,
Curt Khol
Treasurer
